Chateau d'Ayres
“Château D’Ayres”, nestled in the national park of Cévennes, boasts an astonishingly rich historic past, founded as it was sometime in the 7th century, then later destroyed by a succession of invasions and religious wars, before finally being re-established in the early 11th century by a monk by the name of Martin, as an austere monastery flourishing amidst the Benedictine community that followed and settled the area shortly thereafter.
The entire domain was soon known as ‘Saint Martin of Ayres’, ayre being a threshing floor, and the community, and in particular the monastery, thus began receiving many notable and prominent visitors, assuming from its humble beginnings an already distinctive tradition as a prestigious manor of renowned hospitality and accommodation, receiving many gifts of gratitude from its very appreciative guests.
Today what is still fortunately intact is a glorious monument to its venerable past.
Guestrooms are all refined, warm and welcoming, reflecting the magnitude of its cultural heritage with splendid views of its lovingly landscaped lawns, wild-flower meadows and deep bosky woods, still whispering sounds of its eloquent past.
